The Exotic Rainforest A Species Orchid |
Oncidium ampliatum is an orchid species, not a hybrid. The species is found in nature in Central America from Guatemala down through Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru as well as in northern and western Brazil. This incredible oncidium species is noted for its ability to produce massive numbers of flowers. One plant displayed at an AOS show displayed more than 2000 flowers! The leaves of Oncidium ampliatum can grow to be both broad and thick. The plant is interesting even without flowers! The pseudobulbs can grow large and flattened epiphytically against the host tree and are similar in shape to that of a turtle's shell, thus the common name. Inflorescences can reach 1 meter (3 feet) in length. Flowers are normally 2.5cm to 3cm in width (up to 1 1/8th inch). Flowers are bright yellow. Our specimen is quite young and was a gift from Hawaiian collector Windy Aubrey.
